Sebelius Has Bees in Her Bonnet–Giving A Contract to Good Data to Mine HHS Employees Data So We Can See What They Think? Who Cares…Algo Duping Strikes Again…

HHS is using Yammer, a good internal social networking program for sure and it’s very helpful, but this is waste of time and if you want to know, why not use Yammer’s analytics…oh well such is life when you have someone in charge with little or no tech in their background. Wonder how the 75,000 employees feel about this…silly.  She’s been over taken by the NSA stories and hopefully she doesn’t want a little bit of the action (grin), right?

I read stuff like this in the news while the pressure is tremendous for doctors and hospitals today and when see this nonsense, all I can say is it time for a change?  Back in June of 2012 we had this…oh gosh technology is going to save us type of new article..

HHS Secretary Sebelius Still Looking for Tech Breakthroughs To Save the Day

I’ve said it before and time to say it again we have no substantial role models at HHS, the old paradigm of “its for those guys over there” still permeates.  Don’t these folks think about public perception and images?

A couple years ago we had this big deal Facebook contest…for a “disaster app”…I said bees in the bonnet there too and at that time I don’t think she had a clue what Twitter was but has told us now it took her long enough to learn in tweets:)  Everyone else was well into using Twitter for disasters…it’s not that hard to figure out.

HHS Seems To Be Confused on Social Networks–Facebook for Disaster Support Contest, Give Me a Break Use Twitter Like Everyone Else Does

Then we had this the request to “hurry up Health IT”…everyone wants to do that but it takes time, as HHS has now learned with IT projects with the health insurance exchanges.  There were a lot of IT vendors in healthcare that rolled their eyes that bit of brilliance as every programmer and data project manage want to get done sooner but you can’t water board them to speed it up.

Speed Up Rate of Change in Health IT?–“Short Order Code Kitchen Burned Down a Few Years Ago and There Was No Fire Sale”..IT Infrastructure Chance and Revisions Takes a Lot of ”Code”, “Time” and “ Most Importantly Money”

Then we had this letter sent out to all the hospital associations insinuating all were cheating on their billing just before the election..a lot of people took offense to that with even dragging Holder in there too, I guess to show more teeth, best I could figure but it was an over all slap in the face to the industry, so I guess they don’t think about perception and how people view things as such.  Even some folks at Harvard complained on that one.   No example was brought to the table either, just kind of saying “you all better not lie”…sad.  Holder had his own issues with digital Illiterate Lanny going too and all you had to do listen for 5 minutes to the Untouchables and you could see and hear the lack of confidence as he was over his head with not knowing how to investigate high tech crimes

HHS and DOJ Send Letters to Hospital Trade Associations Warning of Gaming Billing System Via Use of Electronic Medical Records–Hospitals Just Learned How to Bill Better & Hired Consultants–Case of Being Algo Duped With Numbers?

In the meantime we had HCA bragging about their billing and how it was gaining profits for them…but nobody looking around over there though..

How is HCA a For Profit Hospital Chain, Making All That Money–Billing in the ER a Contributing Factor for Reimbursements–The Algorithms Move Money and Created Some Very Large Profits And Others Generated ER Care Parameters for the Facilities

Here’s what I said with my tiny observations back in 2010…this how I saw it and still see it…”no role models at HHS”…it is what it is..

HS National Plan to Improve Health Literacy – Not Going To Happen Until We Focus on Using Technology (The Tool for Literacy) Which Includes Role Models at HHS And Other Places in Government

This is kind of sad as I call it a lot of Algo Duping here to where folks get mislead or basically are just addicted to collecting data.  I questioned these 2 back in 2009 (link below) wondering if they had enough or just a tiny bit of tech or business intelligence to be able t determine what has value and what does not and in addition to the quantified self today, we also have the over quantified self.  Good data, the company chosen for analytics markets the fact that they can give you better analytics than Yammer itself, which is owned by Microsoft.  We all need cheerleaders but we also need logic and business intelligence as well.

Nancy-Ann DeParle and Kathleen Sebelius – Business Intelligence?

This is nothing personal and tech folks besides me sit and shakes their heads too and just don’t talk about it.   I thought this rather proved that point with wanting an app to help with addictions, well internets and apps are addictions too..there you go and algo duped oxymoron for sure.  There is not app for internet/app addiction and 65 to 69% of mobile apps are dead anyway.

Apps Aps Everywhere But Nobody Cares–Way Too Many Software Programs and Contests For Programs That Only Do “One Thing” In Healthcare

When you look at the hundreds of quants and professional folks doing analytics to cut costs and save money, creating math models to do so by the minute, this kind of nonsense looks silly as we all know that all models don’t tell the truth and they hurt consumers and again this kind of stuff just points to the fact that all of this seems to way over their heads. Watch the 4 videos in the footer if you want to understand more of how that works, it’s just the flat out truth and reality and a bit about how we all get duped.  Some folks think every query, or piece of code has value, it does not, and that’s where the easy duping comes in.

With the insurance exchanges too I guess Deparle didn't find enough fun in healthcare either and wanted to go back to PE where the fun was according to the interview given.  It was embarrassing to hear her state in the news that “the IT work is all done for the exchanges”…see how out of touch.  When you don’t know, better to be quiet as it hurts credibility.

Nancy DeParle Returns to What She Knows, Private Equity-Technology Experience, Knowledge And Being In Touch With Reality Is What Government Needs Today

Yes Indeed a new focus here, let’s dig in here and find some data…and you can see how the epidemic of data selling has it’s impact too, everyone thinks they need all this data…and nobody seeing the real damage done.  This HHS thing is a prime example of a lot of Algo Duping going on.

We have had other blunders too like John Kerry saying we have the right to be stupid…sounds like a George Bush comment…laughable yes, makes sense..nope.  On the hill we can’t even get the folks to educate themselves..and we have this bragging tweet today from John McCain that he got busted playing poker on his phone during a Senate hearing.  Is it all just about games in DC?

This is pathetic and I don’t even think they care about how they are viewed and what they all really do in public service today.  This is what we are somewhat stuck with.   84% which is 84 senators still use all paper methodologies for this reporting and McCain must be one of the cavemen I guess.  The link below has a lot to say too as good suggestion to help educate Congress.  BD

Congress Needs a Bigger Brain–Restore the Office of Technology Assessment And Truly Assess What is Useful And Remove The Algo Duping Permeating In Government–Fantasy Perceptions That Are Not Real Can Be A Dangerous Thing

The Health and Human Services Department plans to mine data from its internal social network, including deducing employee’s emotions and sentiments, contracting documents show.

Health and Human Services began using the internal social networking site Yammer in late 2012, according to a department blog post. The Facebook-like network is open to all the department’s 75,000 employees, the post said. It’s focused on helping employees better engage with each other across divisions and informally crowdsourcing solutions to workflow issues.

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’ office plans to award a three-month contract to the California-based business intelligence company GoodData to sift through information posted to Yammer to determine employees’ sentiment on particular topics and to learn which topics are trending on the site.

Court Systems Challenged With Digital Literacy, Zimmerman Trial, On National TV Having Trouble Understanding Remote Technologies With Skype–Hilariously Entertaining

The trial is very serious and this is not about that but rather about the lack of the judicial system to use the the software but a ton of consumers know how to use it…Hey when you put your Skype names out on national TV, people interested in the case will try to call you.  imageThe prosecutor was just not smart enough.  Nothing like the viewing public deciding to call in and ask questions (grin).  How long has this prosecutor been using technology?  I keep saying we have too many digital illiterates in lawmaking positions too, but this video is priceless!  By the way, do any states with their legislative processes use Skype?  That goes double for the Hill (grin).  Like below is from two years ago when I really started noticing this emerging trend.  BD

Toxoplasmosis And the Internet–The Spreading of the “Cat” Virus Coming to An Art Festival Near You Soon (Humor)

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease that is carried by cats and isimage carried in the feces and can be transmitted to humans.  Now we have it connected to attention deficit hyperactivity disorders.  It’s a good idea to take a look at the Wikipedia page on this to really appreciate the humor in the video by Kevin Slavin whereby he is demonstrating how so much is take out of context and the “big” warnings from one of us liking, forwarding, etc. all of this to each other and how all of a sudden it’s a big deal and has influential OMG levels emerging.   Look what’s happening to the cats!

Is this what’s going on with Larry Ellison and his Asian  “Cat” art collection too?  Sorry couldn’t resist that one…imageWas he a victim of “cat poop” too?  (grin).

One man affected never stopped drawing cats:)  Cat shit going to the brain.  The cat art festival..what are you doing?  Kevin Slavin  also has a great video about algorithms taking over the world from TED 2011  which is here at the Medical Quack here and included in the Algo Duping video collection.  Love the tweet….BD

Durex Condoms Creates Vibrating Underwear Controlled With a Mobile Smartphone App

Time to lighten it up a bit, but Durex has found yet another way to market imagecondoms it appears:)  Ok so how long before the technology finds some use in Health apps I wonder with strapping on some sensors for an exam to “see if it hurts here or there”.  .  Will they be wrapping up some kind of therapy using touch in a phone?  The article says the product is not out yet, but you can watch the video and see how it works.  Oh boy, bras and underwear with touch actuators and it all goes through an Amazon server.  Gives a new meaning to phone sex.  BD

The condom manufacturer unveiled its new “Fundawear” product yesterday, which is basically a set of undergarments (bras, panties, briefs, and such)  that will vibrate whenever your partner decides you need some sexual attention. Oh, and you can control it from your smartphone — this sort of brings new meaning to the definition of “phone sex.”

According to the demo video, the vibration sensors are supposed to mimic real human touch. You use the smartphone app to specify the portions of your partners body you’d like to stimulate, which are represented through circles on those body parts. When you touch those circles, it activates the underwear’s vibration sensors.

What’s A BitCoin? “You Can Do Anything With Software”- The Colbert Report–Another Software Model With Subsequent Non Stable Algorithms That Execute Something..Maybe Your Dollars…

So the Colbert Report takes on the BitCoin…love it.  He’ heavily invested he says:)  The whole purpose of his video here is to “show what folks can be talked into with software”…we are in many ways victims of our our infrastructure and and it is “gold for geeks” he calls it.  I love the description, imagebased on what the individual finds value with some fancy algorithms.  Hey we are just discovering a lot of this in healthcare too by the way with folks exploring some  non linear models..ahemmm..and boy are some of them out there. I said not too long ago that banks and insurance companies are just software companies anymore too so I’ll be darned this is what banks and Bitcoins have in common but the banks haven’t figured out how to manipulate them yet for profit, they tried though:)  The link below has a video that discusses this and the dangers of being too sucked in at times.  Algorithms move money.

Banks Are Actually Just Software Companies and the Same Can Pretty Much Be Said for Health Insurance Companies As Well-5 Unspoken Reasons Tech Projects Fail

The concept of the bitcoin to give anonymous identify though is a good idea and shortly those needs will need to be addressed whether it is bitcoin or some other software derived system.  It’s been fun to watch it for the last year or so, especially in the last few weeks being all over the news.

In a lot of the new big data articles a good point made that we are driving ourselves over the cliff with not using our common sense as we are duped into thinking that screen is always right, it’s not.  The Algo Duping videos explain a lot of this in the curated group.  Hey when’s Blue Cross going to accept Bitcoins:)  Sorry, was time for a little satire with that remark.  They already buy up all your master card and visa data so with the data addictions insurers have, they’ll be trying get your bit coins too:)  More about the data cliffs at the link below.

Big Data Revolution-Dangers of Using It To Drive Ourselves Off a Cliff -Debunking Myths of Algorithms Replacing Humans In Decision Making Processes in the Healthcare Business (Video)

Now how do banks model and do all this stuff?  Watch this video and you will be enlightened as to what a model is and insurers as well as banks and companies use them. After watching this, next time you might ask the question when something looks fishy “did you just use 6”…fantasy models as Quant Paul Wilmott shows us that there’s no science all on some of the math concoctions that are created and that can lie and deceive

Some companies and banks don’t pay attention to accuracy and create them to make money, so take a look here and let’s hope banks don’t figure out a way to get more of our money with a “BitCoin Model”…(grin) as they did with dollars.  As Mike Osinski says in the video below “you can do anything with software” and how well we remember that with sub prime as none of it could have happened without software..bitcoins are just that as well. The Moocher Class–Jon Stewart Explains-Humorous Look at Models and Algorithms For Profit Affecting Consumers, Those Created By “Rich Data Modeling Moochers”

Leave it to Jon Stewart and his great talent for bringing some very important points home.  We all should know that this has been done by design, it’s models dummy!  He uses all kinds of examples here on where to get money but I have my idea on a serious note and that is to tax and license the data sellers at it plays right into the data and algorithm game.  I ended up spelling this out in a series of posts called “The Attack of the Killer Algorithms” which shows every day events with flawed data and analytics used out of context, good stuff, reality.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Mon - Thurs 11p / 10c
Back in Black - The Moocher Class

Daily Show Full Episodes Indecision Political Humor The Daily Show on Facebook

After you enjoy the video here’s an idea that has been around this blog for quite a while but government and others can’t seem to get a hold of the money made with intangible over rated algorithms and models.  Jon Stewart’s video in a funny way expands on this and what models and algorithms created, and yet the folks who are not a part of or don’t understand how this works are brow beaten all the time and the Occupy movement was a protest against this, and even some of them didn’t know why they were there but this force that works on servers is a big part of it.

Time Has Come to License and Tax the Data Sellers of the Web, Companies, Banks, Social Networks..Any One Making a Profit-Latest Microsoft/Google Privacy War Helping the Cause –Consumers Deserve to Know What Is Being Sold and To Who in a Searchable Format

There are good folks out there too but the wealthy either know how to write the models themselves or have enough money to hire it done for them.  Some take the high road and some don’t.  Look at Jamie Dimon and how it has worked at JP Morgan.  He hires it done as when he has been on video of late when asked about specifics we hear “I don’t know”..enough said there.  Yes indeed it’s the Moocher class created by using models that lie or present huge errors and make money for banks and companies.  Some day when the literacy of this catches up maybe we might be able to see a government that holds banks and companies accountable.  They better hire some smart folks on their side for sure to go after accountability as conventional methods can’t get it all.   Scroll on down to the bottom of this page for a few videos that might help you grasp some of this as it’s not easy as you can’t touch, see, feel or talk to these models and algorithms as a consumer.  The Algo Duping page has a few more videos that I have curated from people smarter than me.

Again, I keep patiently putting up my campaign that is an epidemic in the US as listed above and more here about the huge profits made (i.e. Walgreens in 2010 making short of $800 million selling data) and how this adds to exposure for security breaches and less money going towards manufacturing, where the jobs are.  Nobody is accountable and banks and companies have gone hog wild and it hurts all of us.  It’s an addiction to the big data chase thinking there just has to be one tiny element that get the ultimate goods on you, like insurance companies buying up all our Visa and MasterCard data…looking for those buying clothes one size larger…hmmm…try that one again as obesity and being over weight is pretty visual and not something folks can hide very easily, anyway you get my point on the addiction here and you pay for all of this with higher insurance premiums too, with going way beyond what is needed to run a business.  BD

Why wouldn’t the Medical Quack like this one:)  I do have to admit the old Duck Hunt game was a favorite going back to Windows 95, a classic…now add on a pin ball machine and it really gets to be fun.  It’s still in proto type but I would have one. It quacks very well too. BD

JOBS Act Turns a Year Old–Big Companies are Figuring Out How to Model It to Make Money, Minimal Success So Far For Small Business

This article from the Atlantic does a pretty good job with detailing a series of events that has taken place to include in their opinion that it’s not doing much and when you look at what they present, it’s kind of hard to argue. Fewer IPOs are taking place for one. No matter what the government imagedoes for small businesses there’s corporate USA and the banks with models to figure out how to cash in. Sure there might be some small businesses that have been able to jump in in a small way, but not a lot more than that. It’s just like anything else out there with a law that has way too many loopholes in it, the banks and big corporations figure out how to make it work for them.

Part of the issues at hand is the cost for creating models which small businesses don’t have or can’t afford.  It’s kind of interesting as there were of course good intentions here by all means and backed by the VC groups but they are getting outsmarted by the banks.  Goldman Sachs figured out how to use it.  Goldman Sachs Liberty Harbor Capital is a new company they created to invest in risky high yielding small US companies.  It means they get to do more behind closed doors with this effort basically. They are not alone as other “shell” companies are emerging as well.  Wonder what we will see in healthcare with the so called shells?  Goldman's new company won’t have to submit to an audit for five years and a lot can happen in that time too.

The crowdfunding portion of the law is moving along like a snail and this is really where the opportunities lie for small businesses.   Big investment firms and Hedge funds will now get to advertise…big deal for main street.  I guess no matter how you build the models and algorithms, if the money is not there, it’s not going to fly well, unless you are a big conglomerate that already has plenty of money.  Here’s what’s going on in the medical device businessimage, more jobs going over seas and again we have that “insane” intangible value problem with over valuation of software, algorithms and so on.  The big company modelers will be there to “out model” the small businesses for sure.  It’s just too bad that the legal folks in this country don’t bring on some technologists when they write laws today, they should be their partners for sure.  Legal and technology fields should work together as b now I should guess that the legal beagles might have learned they are no match for a technologists that models.  Here’s a good article that talks about algorithms in medicine where “common sense” is also discussed.

Healthcare Reform Pushes Medical Device Outsourcing to Bigger Markets Overseas With Cardiology Projected to Have the Highest Growth–Killer Algorithms Pushing More Job Growth Out of the US With Insane Intangibles Psuedo Values

That is so much of the issues we have today as some models have some fiction built in and nobody verifies their accuracy.  If you scroll down and watch the 4 videos in the footer here, you will get a better understanding on how this works.  I have been saying this forever as insurance companies do it with active models working to find loopholes on every step that a law takes in it’s creation.  They know the loopholes right up front and strategically play them as they benefit for profits.

A former Wall Street Quant, Cathy O’Neil makes this case perfectly clear with her blog post from a few days ago “We Don’t Need More Complicated Models, We Need to Stop Lying With Our Models” and who’s better to say than her as she does that for a living and has worked on both sides.  The sooner that the government and others come out of “shell shock” here and realize what the technology is that is used on the other side, the better off we will all be as the future with regulation and finding fraud depends on making companies accountable by verifying their models and what techniques they are using.  Too many folks blindly believe everything on the screen, like the ones who end up in dead end streets listening to everything their GPS unit tells them:)  I love that correlation as it tells you to listen to your common sense and not get carried away with Algo Fairies that lurk out there.  So don’t forget we do have common sense as humans and don’t let that GPS unit or other algorithms convince you to 100% buy in and drive your car or yourself over the cliff.  Ask questions when something doesn’t seem right.  BD

Big Data Revolution-Dangers of Using It To Drive Ourselves Off a Cliff -Debunking Myths of Algorithms Replacing Humans In Decision Making Processes in the Healthcare Business (Video)

On April 5, 2012, in the Rose Garden of the White House, US president Barack Obama signed the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, one of those distinctly American pieces of legislation that hits you over the head with an unequivocally positive acronym--in this case, JOBS. The law, parts of which went into effect right away, was intended to help startups grow and, in the process, add more jobs to the US economy. Exactly a year later, it's worth taking stock of how the JOBS Act is doing.

The JOBS Act was supposed to encourage smaller companies to go public. Startups, it was argued, were delaying IPOs or avoiding them altogether because of the regulatory burdens, stunting potential growth in the American economy. So the JOBS Act greatly reduced the disclosure and accounting requirements for IPOs by companies with less than $1 billion in annual revenue.

But in the year since the law went into effect, just 63 such firms have gone public, down from 80 in the previous 12 months. That's a 21% drop despite improving economic conditions. And in Silicon Valley, at which many provisions of the JOBS Act were explicitly aimed, the situation is even more dire: only eight venture-backed American companies went public in the first quarter of this year, raising $672 million, compared to 19 such IPOs that raised $1.7 billion a year prior, before the law was signed. The dot-com boom this is not.

Extormity EHR Anticipates a High Level of Client Suicides For Those Who Can’t Change to Another Medical Records System–And Is Ready To Help the Remaining 40% Get Moving…Humor

I made sure I put “humor” in the title as of late we have some GOP folks not being able to distinguish the difference:)  If you imagemissed that one here’s the link…and here we have our favorite Health IT satire buddies back at it.  Let’s face it, what choice do you have but suicide if you can’t afford to change or are stuck for other reasons…might as well just put an end to it now:)

Digital Literacy Needed–Senator McConnell Staff Falls for Parody Blog Post–Everything On the Internet Is Not True, Duped, Duped and Duped Again

Here’s video they did back in 2011 and with the link above this is worth repeating again as I think it even has more meaning today with the next phase of meaningful use coming along....enjoy.  BD

Electronic health record vendor Extormity today announced that nearly 75 percent of its existing customer base reports being dissatisfied, extremely dissatisfied or contemplating suicide based on the decision to implement the Extormity EHR solution. Further, Extormity expects nearly 40 percent of its clients to de-install their solution in 2013 and switch to another vendor.

Citing a recent study which indicated that nearly 20 percent of EHR users could be switching out their first choice EHR this year, Extormity CEO Brantley Whittington stated "We are ecstatic that unhappiness levels among our clients clearly outpaces the industry average."

"Even as analysts are expressing concern with these statisticsimage, these findings have generated incredible buzz about Extormity - resulting in a disproportionate share of media attention," added Whittington. "Better yet, the focus on dissatisfaction levels has obscured questionable financial dealings, several catastrophic medical errors linked to flawed clinical decision support algorithms, and more breaches than you can shake a stick at."

While the projected de-conversion rate could be considered alarming, Extormity officials remain bullish on the company’s future. "While much of our installed base is fleeing the good ship Extormity, we are winning new clients at a record pace as providers head for the exits with other vendors who also made expensive empty promises," added Whittington.

"When one considers early termination penalties, exorbitant costs for data conversion and the steep hourly rates we charge clients who are transitioning away from our EHR, we expect record profits which will fund the construction of our new corporate headquarters."

FedEx Talks Social Media–Get the Text Out of the Box, More Likes and More Tweets Not Expanding Business for Radiator Valves (Hilarious)

This is great and in humorous way you look at the silly focus some folks have with social media.  Sure it has a place and I do my share of it of course, but when you see management that have no clue address it like this, the laugh is really on the management:)

I have to laugh my fanny off myself sometimes when I see some of the stuff that goes on.  I even had Google plus tell me my name didn’t meet with their name policies after having been there since beta day.  How dare machine learning technology!  It has to learn about ducks so don’t trust everything on your screens these days to be accurate.  Now back to FedEx and his funny video that reminds you of the human and personal touch that gets lost with all caught up in the text.  I often say friends don’t reduce real friends to text and email as a primary means of communication…it’s true too.  BD

Crimson Lied –Jon Stewart The Test Was A Take Home, Open Book, Open Internet, Open Note, And Students Still Cheated–What Class and Test Material Was It - Good Enough Reason to Cheat? Hilarious!

imageMy first thoughts until I listened further was I hope this is the medical school (grin), and of course it was not.  You have to love this though as everything was open for research and some we too lazy to research, oh well.  So Jon has his day here with his comments and you know what the class was?  This is the funniest part of the video yet:

And the the Subject of the Test was: Government 13, Introduction to Congress, and if that is not ironic and funny, I don’t know what is…were they afraid to use any websites of those currently serving in Congress?  Maybe that’s why they cheated (grin) as those sites didn’t offer any quality information  (grin)?    Now go back and read something serious where you get cheated all the time where algorithms live and bite:)  I think I can say though that neither the House nor the Senate can recognize a good law modeling too when it’s put in their face and stuck on their nose.  Yup, we get back to “its for those guys over there” once again. Maybe they could write their own grant?  Was this a message from the students perhaps too in a back door fashion?  All good questions.  BD

Couple Uses Coffee Enemas, Several A Day They are Convinced Is Saving Their Health

This is story and a half but I’ll take my coffee as a beverage.  For 2 years a few enemas every day.  When we hear about the imagec diff fecal transplants who knows?  I wonder how many bathrooms they have in the house.  They both work from home so they can do their thing whenever they want.  Hilarious watch them go to the store and how picky they are about the flavors…I didn’t think that happened at that end:)  I could go on there but I’ll stop.  I guess if it works for them and they can adhere to this …well knock yourself out.  It’s a good thing they are both in this together as if they were not, the other partner might not be as excited about the idea.

The pictures in the video certainly don’t seem to look like a normal enema session for sure but this is the web and TV so I’m guessing a little dress up was in order here:)  BD

Bill Gates Visits The Colbert Report–Talks About Data and Tracking Money To See Results With the Gates Foundation–Only 250 Cases World Wide of Polio

This was a first for Bill Gates and Melinda Gates has been imageon the Colbert Report a couple times.  All the Gates Foundation discussions revolve mostly around healthcare and education.  Bill Gates talks about polio and the results seen on eradicating the disease.  Colbert asks why are you helping other countries instead of the US and Gates explains the focus in the US is education.  Polio was down to 250 cases in the world last year and the next report will say zero. Bill Gates says passion is ahead of data but it is part of the passion.

Colbert asks if other countries know if Bill Gates is an American.  He asks Bill Gates if he misses the intensity and coding at Microsoft.  Bill Gates says his approach to technology is a lot geekier than Steve Jobs was.  BD

Dr. Oz Visits Piers Morgan for a Brief Physical And Talks BMI and Blood Pressure

Dr. Oz is making the rounds to make sure out late night show hosts are in good shape.  The conversation about the belt isimage funny and so true.  After hearing his numbers Piers has invited Dr. Oz to come back in 6 weeks after asking Dr. Oz how long it would take to make some progress, so looks like we will get a revisit…perhaps it’s all the stress from the recent talk on his stand on guns that’s running up his blood pressure and they mention that too.  Well at least the late night shows are in two cities so not too far for Dr. Oz to make TV “host” calls.  Just a couple days ago we had Jimmy Kimmel with Dr. Oz and you can read and view that post here.

Actually this is great way to bring about awareness and in humorous way and does so much more than those bogus reports about how fat people are wrecking the economy.  This makes sense to educate this way as all those folks doings reports are about half off their rockers anyway with their “risk and cost” numbers.  If it wasn’t this battle with healthcare it would be others.  Good show and realistic too, again by comparison to those horrible reports where nobody can really predict as what you save today gets zapped by something else tomorrow be it a drug, a procedure, an insurance parameter change, and more, and that too has been in the news of late too.  BD

Dr. Oz Performs a “Live Sonogram” on Jimmy Kimmel Show All Up on the Big Screen and Guillermo Gets a Prostate Exam

imageThis is funny and you have ultrasound right up there on the big screen and Jimmy is healthy.  “Don’t talk about our tweets” he says to Dr. Oz ad Jimmy Kimmel has added a treadmill in his office, his private moments.  This is funny when he turns on the sounds, sounds like a washing machine Jimmy states.  The gal from UCLA was great.  This video is so funny all the way through and they save the colon for last and Jimmy gets a little uneasy and says “don’t go in the regular way”.  They go next into talking about fecal material in the colon.  A couple years ago we had Dr. Oz and the purple glove routine which is also so funny!

Dr. Oz Visits Jimmy Kimmel and Discusses Nutrition, Obesity, Size
and Gives a Few Impromptu Exams (Videos)

Then it gets better with getting Guillermo up there forimage his sonogram.  He actually gained 4 pounds since Dr. Oz’s last visit, and his waist size is 43.  He tells Guillermo to stop drinking.  Then the purple gloves come out again for a prostate exam and out comes the KY jelly, ends up in his hair, and they go into a conversation about prostate cancer.  If you watched the show the next 2 guests, players from the Clippers came right out and said I don’t want any part of those purple gloves:)  BD

The Overweight Obsession Continues–Wireless HapiFork That Tracks Your Food and “Fork to Face” Rate–Data for a PHR?

You know all start ups don’t make it and I’m not sure on this one, imagewhat’s next a spoon, chopsticks that track food?  If you are eating too fast the fork vibrates and you know a fork is not the first thing I think of when I hear the word vibrate:)  It’s coming out in February and will set you back about $100 dollars.  You know I have a toothbrush that I love that vibrates and it serves a purpose and gets my teeth clean by I certainly don’t think I am that much of a moron that needs a device to tell me how eat as if I blow it, my own body will tell me in more ways than one.

On top of that it needs an app!  I swear it’s like invent it and see if it sticks to the wall.  It’s from a Chinese company and maybe they already have smart chopsticks over there with a two for one that vibrate:)  The video is priceless and she only gives him 60 seconds and she says “not good for me”.  You can take pictures of what you are eating too…this is just silly and I made light of a blue tooth toothbrush not too long ago but this is worse than that and oh yes, how much data does is collect to send to some insane wellness coach:)

Bluetooth Tooth Brush–Send Your Brushing Habits to Your Dentist, Please Not This.….

One of my Medical Quack Sponsors, MMRGlobal who attended the CES show even stopped by and talked to these “fork folks”.   I’m thinking, are you crazy?  Actually Bob Lorsch was also doing a post reflecting on the history of Comdex and CES shows and how they have evolved to imagewhere we are today.  Well it turns out he met with this company (which he mentions in his blog) and talked a little about how their PHR, MyMedicalRecords.com could potentially integrate and store this “Fork to Face” information. Shoot if you really want to have all you data, hook up that Bluetooth toothbrush when you finish with the fork.   This just goes to show that you can store just about anything in a PHR today and it’s your choice for what you consider important and obviously medications and allergies are primary along with any other medical information, and from there it’s up to you, so you can start stuffing it full of fork and toothbrush data:)

People are measuring everything today and so for those who feel this vibrating fork can be of help to them, I guess go for it, but not my first choice:)  I  always like to project a big picture in my mind on how it could enter the mainstream, and today you never know what will stick, but I certainly don’t want some insane “wellness coach” in on this routine looking at these types of stats <grin> as I still can think for myself in this area.   So far in life I have had no problem figuring out how to eat and I’m a slow eater anyway as everyone finishes before me so not something I would choose and I’ll stay with the one the restaurant gives me.  BD
